| Arabia Mountain High School opened in August 2009 and is the first LEED Silver Certified public high school in Georgia. The school has received local, national, and international recognition (via NBC, FOX, CNN, Weather Channel, and various worldwide newspaper and Internet articles). Arabia’s construction targeted 40% water savings, 94% recycling of on job waste, and 20-25% power consumption savings. Located in Lithonia in south DeKalb County, Arabia Mountain High School is adjacent to the Arabia Mountain National Heritage area. Arabia hosts DeKalb Schools’ Environmental Energy and Engineering Magnet Program which is designed to support students aspiring to become engineers, soil conservationists, microbiologists and other environmental related professions. |

| Arabia uses the EIC (Environment as an Integrating Context) instructional model. The EIC ModelTM was developed by the State Education and Environment Roundtable and seeks to improve student achievement through hands-on learning using both local natural and community surroundings. Students at Arabia are required to complete 20 service learning hours. Service-learning is directly linked to the academic curriculum, making meaningful connections to Arabia Mountain’s educational goals. In contrast to community service, service-learning is an instructional methodology that combines academic endeavors with meeting identified community needs. Through service-learning activities, students apply subject area content and skills in authentic settings. This real-world context provides opportunities for students to work directly in our local environment, promoting development of active civic participation and responsibility. Through service-learning activities, students discover that they can play an important role and make a significant difference in the community. |
